A hand carved relief of the Mother of God and the Christ Child, cut in solid beechwood and finished so the grain still reads through the surface. The icon of Pochaev has been venerated in western Ukraine since the sixteenth century, and this carving keeps its familiar arrangement: the Child held close against his Mother's cheek, her right hand resting beneath him, both figures framed by an arch and a woven border.

The relief is deep enough to hold real shadow, so the faces change as the light in the room moves across them. The back is flat and finished, ready to hang or to stand on a shelf in an icon corner.

Two sizes

Small. 30 x 21.5 x 3.5 cm (11.8 x 8.5 x 1.4 in). Upright and narrow, sized for a shelf or a small icon corner.
Medium. 28 x 26 x 4 cm (11 x 10.2 x 1.6 in). Broader and slightly deeper, with more carved surface and a heavier frame.
